"I've always loved art & design. As far back as I can remember, I was always drawing, painting, dreaming and crafting. I was the child that had remarkable doodles, illustrations, and poems in the margins of all my class notes."
A New York City native, Kristy's creative career began in Advertising as a Jr. Graphic Designer, where she design assisted on advertisements for many popular Broadway shows. (Les Mis, Phantom, Wicked, anyone?)
Over the years, she also worked as an Editorial Administrative Assistant at DC Comics, and an Advertising Manager and Designer for a NYC celebrity chef. However, with a passion for working with kids and a strong desire to give back to her community, she decided to pursue a Master's degree in Childhood Education and left to teach.
After spending 15 years as an elementary, middle school and pre-school teacher, she returned to her creative roots to launch Kristy Breens Designs in 2020. She studied Graphic Design at SVA (2000), and online classes with Adobe (2020), Udemy (2020), and Shaw Academy (2020). She also studied Pattern Surface Design with Rachael Taylor through Make It In Design, The Art & Business of Surface Pattern Design (2020-2021). A life-long learner, she delights in continually taking workshops to hone her skills and learn new methods of art making.
As a versatile digital artist, surface pattern designer and graphic artist, she is equally comfortable creating bold graphic designs, vector pattern designs or hand painted spot illustrations and hand lettering for creative projects. Left to my her devices, she most enjoy making whimsical, fun, and trend forward designs for home decor, stationery, prints and the gift market.
Kristy resides with her family in Northern Virginia. She is a Film & TV fanatic (B.A. in Media Studies & Film Studies) and frequently enjoys binge watching shows with her husband and children. She's also a musical theatre lover and would happily break into a show tune or two anytime. She adores animals, and is lucky to count three cats and a coonhound as part of her family. Other things she's particularly fond of include poetry, plants, crafting with kids, crystals and reiki. She's an award winning poet and a certified holistic healer and reiki master!
